Current Activities

In September 2007 Stars of Hope moved to Ruai which is a rural residential area on the outskirts of Nairobi.

In April 2007 Ruth and Gem went to Ruai to visit the area after discussing that in the future it would be ideal to move away from the slum and create a centre of self-sustainability for local people while providing a safe and caring home for the vulnerable children that attend the centre in Dandora. The idea was to take the most vulnerable children to Ruai to live.

The children would be the ones who had no support or care at home; whose parents could not afford to feed them; those who were too sick to be cared for at home or children who were experiencing abuse at home. The centre in Dandora would continue to operate as a day care centre and refuge for children in Dandora. Any sick, mistreated or neglected children would be monitored and moved to Ruai, officially adopted by Stars of Hope.

Gem and Ruth decided that should this all happen then Ruth would move to Ruai, escaping life in the slum for the first time in her life, handing the centre in Dandora over to Teacher Rachel, a well respected lady in Dandora. The centre would continue to offer jobs in the area.

Later on in the year Stars of Hope progressed successfully and with haste, allowing us to move to Ruai in September 2007 and follow the plan as Ruth and Gem had set out in April. This was unexpected and most exciting. The short film shows us there with the first four children, just 2 weeks after moving.
