May 2008
May has started positively and there is much work for Stars over the coming months to see that the individuals who are benefiting from our service continue to receive the best care we can give them.
On April 21st Gem went back out to Kenya to stay and work with Ruth in the centre in Ruai. We now have 22 children who each have a personnal and long story that has brought them to the centre. The centre has drawn the attention of the community and is benefiting local people and small businessess in the surrouding area of Ruai.
The centre has developed in many ways, from the growing number of children who live there, to the number of people in the area who are benefiting from employment. The centre is becoming more self sufficient with our own vegetables being grown, chickens are kept and rain water is collected in the water tank. Ruth and Gem investigated land near to the centre and have initiated the plan to buy 1 and 1/4 acres to build our very own home as the centre we are in now is rented. The land we found will be bought off a group of women who will use the money to generate better equipped maternity wards in a near by hospital. The children at Stars are very well cared for and many who joined in a poor state are regaining health and happiness.
The disruptions in Kenya have resulted in prices of living going up. Food prices have doubled and people are living on a fine line, but the Kenyan spirit is still as strong and upbeat as ever.
The month of May is also seeing in a progression in the desicion to work in Bali, supporting a day care centre for individuals with disabilities.
